Happy ninth birthday to the Harvest Launceston Community Farmers’ Market and what an incredible ninth year it has been. The market, thanks to its community, the stallholders, volunteers and patrons, has endured a pandemic and continues to takes its place as a Launceston Saturday morning ritual.
We went online, we went offline and back to a physical market. On that cold and grey winter morning, the 23rd of May 2020, the Harvest community emerged from lockdown to shop local and support each other wondering about what kind of new Covid-19 constrained world we would be living in. Today, each Saturday we can sometimes think that not too much has changed, but as we look to our future we know that at any moment we could be struck again by the pandemic. However, we also know that as a community we can survive it together with our local farmers and food artisans.
Harvest continues to grow. A highlight was the launch of the SOMA stage that sees many faces and heard many diverse voices, from school choirs to Mona Foma sensation Brian Ritchie and the United States of Amnesia during the January festival. Going forward, keep your ears open as local musicians harness the stage to nurture our local live music scene.
But there is more, on the evening of Saturday 13th March Harvest will launch its movie screen and pay homage to our Harvest women as part of the International Women’s Day celebrations. We are screening Ride Like A Girl, the story of the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup and will feature the stories of the women scientists, farmers, volunteers and food artisans who each week bring their produce to the market.
This week at harvest we have the summer bounty of tomatoes at Tasmanian Natural Garlic & Tomatoes and Felds Farm, together with the best summer vegetables and fruit. Over at Sandy’s Sourdough there will be plenty of the best pastries and breads to tempt the fussiest taste buds and if you are looking for a protein hit have a chat with Tim and Kate at Tassie Hemp to see just how this amazing crop can benefit you.
See you on Saturday, the weather forecast is for a partly cloudy day with a minimum of 12° and a maximum of 23°.
