The Harvest Launceston Community Farmers’ Market is nothing without its volunteers, whose enthusiasm is the driving force and spirit that makes the market the best place to be on a Saturday morning.
Joeby Neil joined the Harvest Launceston volunteer team about two months ago. He said he could not resist being part of an event which “draws in thousands of people each week and crates a warm and inviting atmosphere for visitors”.
A full-time student studying Information and Communication Technology at the University of Tasmania, Joeby says the attraction of Harvest for him is that he is able to buy his groceries for the week and know that he is supporting local people, the local economy and getting the chance to talk to the people who grow his food.
To start with Joeby joined the early morning crew in setting up the infrastructure, the marquees, seating and signage. However, he has also manned the Harvest stall and says one of the things he loves about volunteering at Harvest is that he gets to work with interesting people from all walks of life.
In celebrating this year’s International Volunteer Day on 5th December, we give thanks to the members of our community who give up their time to ensure the market runs smoothly each week. Volunteering does not only benefit the Harvest market but research has shown that volunteers are happier, more successful and local communities are strengthened.
Anyone interested in volunteering we would love to hear from you. Please contact: email@example.com, visit our website at harvestmarket.org.au, or visit us on a Saturday morning at the Harvest marquee where one of our wonderful volunteers will be happy to chat with you.
